"Midwife" encompasses different providers in the US who support women during pregnancy and childbirth. Nurse-Midwives specifically are advanced practice nurses with a master's degree or higher from an accredited program. Certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board and licensed by our state, we adhere to standards set by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. Ongoing education keeps our skills sharp. While most work in hospitals or clinics, more are now offering homebased services. In South Dakota, Nurse-Midwives care for women from adolescence onward, as well as healthy newborns up to 28 days old.
A nurse midwife does more than just catch babies. Although that is within our scope of practice, I love caring for women throughout the lifespan. We can care for you from adolescence, dealing with hormone changes and period concerns, to everyday common illnesses and injuries, to family planning, pregnancy, birth and postpartum, and through menopause; a midwife is a great go to healthcare provider for women at any stage of life.
If you require more care than I can give, I will help get you to someone who can.
Midwives are experts at normal. We are great at preventive care and keeping you on the path of excellent health.
We offer free consults for both primary and prenatal care to talk through your history and decide if we are able to provide the services you need. At that visit you have the opportunity to ask more about our services and expertise as well as let us know your preferences and desires for care. Our goal will be to determine if we are a good fit and get to know one another.
Our scope of practice is determined by the American College of Nurse Midwives and the State of South Dakota Board of Nursing. Visit https://sdlegislature.gov/Statutes/36-9A for SD laws on the Scope of a Nurse-Midwife.
Nurse-midwives are trained healthcare professionals that specialize in caring for women during pregnancy and birth. Research shows the nurse-midwives employ fewer interventions while achieving comparable outcomes. We arrive when you are in active labor and and stay hours after the birth ensuring you get consistent quality care.
You will receive personalized care with longer appointment times and develop a close and trusting relationship with those who attend your birth. We are experts at labor support and offer a wide array of comfort measures, including hydrotherapy (water birth). You have more control with a midwife and we work around you as much as possible so you can do your thing.
You can stay in the comfort of your own home for appointments and the birth. No need to travel in labor or be in an uncomfortable environment. Birthing in your home also reduces the risk of infection due to fewer interventions and exposures to harmful germs.
I am not currently taking patients for homebirth services, but am happy to talk to you about your options and refer you to some other great midwives or to a hospital provider that can meet your needs.
My goal is to provide excellent and personalized care at a reasonable price. You will receive longer visits within the comfort of your own home and have easy access to your provider without the normal barriers you might face at other clinics. I have a low volume practice purposefully to be as available as possible for my patients. Prices will be discussed at the free New Client Consult.
You may use a health savings account to pay for services. Bright Well is a cash based clinic. I am unable to accept insurance payments at this time. Some insurance companies and many health share companies reimburse you a portion of the cost. I provide a superbill for you to submit for reimbursement. Call your insurance company to ask about getting care from an out of network provider for more information.
